I suppose I'd describe myself as an equal mix of country lass and town girl...
I grew up on a tiny smallholding where I fell in love with food, with where it comes from and with using wonderful ingredients to their full potential.
The veg patch was one of my haunts, making camps behind rows of climbing beans, digging up spuds pretending they were hidden treasure and hours spent picking redcurrants and raspberries for pocket money. I've never lost the love of the garden and, now I have my own small London plot, I spend endless hours trying to coax fruit and veg to grow, while doing battle with the snails.
My mum is an amazing cook... I know everyone says that, but in my case it really is true! She taught me that food should be fun, it doesn't have to be fancy... If it's made with love and the best ingredients you can find, that's what really matters. Sharing something you've cooked with loved ones is about as good as life gets.
Food is the biggest part of my day, constant planning and plotting what to eat next, what new flavours to try and who might have something good to share. For me, food has a magic about it that constantly inspires and delights me.
I love to write and have been writing recipes and features for magazines for the last 10 years.
I published my first book in 2013 - "Winter Kitchen" for Ebury and the Great British Bake Off. The book was listed as one of the Guardian's top cookery books of 2013.
My second book in for the gang at GBBO called "Christmas" came in the top 25 cookery books sold in 2014.
My new book "Winter Cabin Cooking" for RPS is about to be released and i am SO excited about it! I can't wait to share with you all the cheesy goodness that comes with Alpine cuisine. Winter food has never been so comforting or delicious.

The Mental Health Benefits of Baking
Before we dive into the books, let's take a moment to talk about how baking can actually improve mental health. During the holidays, we often feel the pressures of gift-giving, socializing, and preparing for family gatherings, which can take a toll on our mental well-being. But baking offers a wonderful escape. Here are a few ways baking supports mental health:
- Reduces Stress: The process of mixing ingredients, following a recipe, and watching a dish come together can be incredibly grounding. It helps you focus on the present moment, distracting you from worries or negative thoughts.
- Promotes Mindfulness: Baking is a mindful activity. It requires your full attention, whether you're kneading dough or carefully decorating cookies. Engaging in these tasks can help calm a racing mind and lower anxiety.
- Boosts Creativity: Baking allows for creative expression, whether you’re experimenting with new flavors or decorating your treats. Creativity has been shown to increase feelings of happiness and satisfaction.
- Sense of Accomplishment: There’s something incredibly fulfilling about completing a baking project. Watching your work turn into something delicious provides a sense of pride and accomplishment, which can significantly boost your mood.
- Social Connection: Sharing the fruits of your labor with friends and family creates bonds and provides a sense of connection—something that's especially valuable during the holiday season when isolation can affect mental well-being.
Now that we've highlighted how baking can be a great way to care for your mental health, let's take a look at five delightful baking books that will inspire your holiday treats and add a little extra joy to your celebrations.
